Big Spring is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 87 and Interstate 20; its population of 25,233 (2000 Census) makes it the largest city between Midland to the west, Abilene to the east, Lubbock to the north, and San Angelo to the south. Big Spring was established as the county seat of Howard County in 1882 and is also the largest city in that county. The city got its name from the single, large spring that issued into a small gorge from between the base of Scenic Mountain and a neighboring hill, in the SW part of the city limits. The Spring, now dry, was of major importance to all life in the surrounding area. In the early 1840s, it was the center of a territorial dispute between Comanche and Pawnee tribes, and has been a major watering hole for wildlife and prehistoric man in this semi-arid area. (G. Brune, 'Springs of Texas', 1981). -- Source: Wikipedia.com

Clarification
01/18/2012

In last week's story about New Orleans' Independent Police Monitor ("Watching the Detectives," Jan. 10, 2012), we wrote that the Office of the Inspector General's (OIG) budget is "$6 million-plus." According to Suzanne Lacey Wisdom, acting general counsel in the OIG's office, this figure, which comes from 2012 city budget documents, is based in part on "two entirely speculative sources of funding" totaling $2.6 million from the state and the feds.…

Curfew for the Few?
01/18/2012

If the curfew is truly about safety, then people across the city deserve the same protection as the French Quarter and Marigny Back in November, after the Halloween night shootings that made national news, New Orleans City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell expressed her frustration with the city's approach to troubled teenagers — particularly the public school expulsion rate, saying, "It doesn't deal with the problem. It takes the problem out of one venue and puts it in another, but it doesn't solve the problem."…

Were 49ers fans out of hand at Saturday's Saints game?
01/18/2012

While it seems most people have put last Saturday's Saints loss to the San Francisco 49ers behind them and are looking forward to the 2012 season, one aspect of the game hasn't gone away. Some who went to the game at Candlestick Park said the behavior of some 49ers fans went far beyond good-natured rivalry. (Exhibit A: Renee Peck's essay for NolaVie.)

This surprised me, because I've visited the Bay Area many times and always found it a friendly city.…

Saints fans: Watch this video of a sad Packers' fan crying to cheer you up

All in all, that loss on Saturday still stings a bit (we haven't even watched highlights since the end of the game) but it's hard to stay down while watching this utterly ridiculous video of a sad Packers' fan crying to her friend after Green Bay lost to the New York Giants on Sunday.

Really, take a moment and enjoy this video and then remember that you're lucky enough not to have to live in a frozen tundra and that Mardi Gras is right around the corner.…
